Using Data Size & Storage Converter
Work out why a "500 GB" drive shows about 465 in your computer, or convert a file size between bytes, megabytes, mebibytes and bits for a quota or upload limit.
How to use it
- Type the number into Input Size.
- Choose the source unit. KB, MB, GB and TB step by 1,000; KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB step by 1,024.
- Choose the target unit and read Converted Size.
- Scan the Equivalent Units Matrix to see the same quantity in every unit at once.
Worked example
- Input and settings
- 500 GB to GiB
- Expected result
- 465.661287308 GiB, which is why a 500 GB drive appears as about 465 GB in Windows.
Limits and common mistakes
- Windows labels binary sizes with decimal names (it says GB where it means GiB); macOS uses true decimal GB.
- Network speeds are usually in bits per second: 100 Mbps moves about 12.5 megabytes per second at best.
- A formatted drive has less usable space than its raw capacity, because the filesystem uses some of it.
- The matrix shows up to six decimal places, which hides very small values in the largest units.
