🔣 HTML Entity Encoder / Decoder
Safely escape reserved HTML characters for markup or unescape numeric & named entity strings.
Using HTML Entity Encoder & Decoder
Show characters such as < and & as text on a web page instead of having the browser treat them as markup, or turn escaped entities back into readable characters.
How to use it
- Type into Plain Text / HTML, or use the insert buttons to add characters such as ©, € or an em dash.
- Click Encode → to replace <, >, &, double quotes and apostrophes with entity codes (an apostrophe becomes ').
- To reverse it, paste escaped text into the right-hand box and click ← Decode.
- Copy the result into your template, blog editor or email source.
Worked example
- Input and settings
- Fish & Chips <£5> "today"
- Expected result
- Fish & Chips <£5> "today"
Limits and common mistakes
- Only a set of common named entities decodes; less common names such as é stay as written, though numeric forms like – always work.
- Encoding is correct for text inside HTML elements, but it does not make content safe inside a <script> block, a URL or a CSS value.
- Decoded text can contain live tags; pasting it into a page as HTML will render them.
- Characters such as £ and € are left as-is, since modern UTF-8 pages display them without entities.
