About converting JPG to PNG
Converting a JPEG to PNG changes the file format without recovering detail already discarded by JPEG compression. Artifacts in the original remain in the output. Keep your original photo if you need an archival copy.
PNG stores the rendered pixels without an additional lossy quality setting. The output often grows, so use it when PNG is required rather than expecting a smaller upload. There is no PNG quality slider.
A JPEG contains no transparent pixels. Converting it to PNG does not remove the background or create a transparent cut-out. Check the output dimensions and actual byte size before using the file.
The image conversion runs in your browser without uploading your file. Keep the original: this creates a still image and does not promise to preserve animation, metadata, or color profiles.
Using JPG to PNG Converter
Get a PNG copy of a photo when a form, print service or editing app accepts only PNG, or when you plan to edit the image repeatedly and don't want more JPEG loss each time you save.
How to use it
- Drop the JPEG onto the upload area or click it to choose the file. Phone photos are rotated upright using their orientation tag.
- Leave Max width empty to keep the original pixel size, or enter a width to shrink it; the height follows the aspect ratio.
- Check the stats line: it shows the pixel size before and after, the byte sizes, and how much larger the PNG is.
- Click Download. The file keeps its original name with a .png extension.
Worked example
- Input and settings
- holiday.jpg, 4032 ร 3024, Max width 1200
- Expected result
- holiday.png at 1200 ร 900; expect it to be several times larger than the JPEG.
Limits and common mistakes
- Converting cannot add transparency: the PNG has the same solid background the photo had.
- Max width only shrinks; a value larger than the photo leaves it at its original size.
- Camera metadata such as location and date is not copied into the PNG.
- Very large photos can exceed a phone's memory; the tool accepts up to 25 MiB and 16.7 million output pixels.
