About converting PNG to WebP
This is the conversion that pays for itself on a website. WebP can reduce the size of some PNG images, but the amount depends on the source and encoder settings. This tool uses your browserβs encoder and does not offer a guaranteed lossless mode.
Transparency is preserved. WebP carries a full alpha channel, so logos, icons, and cut-out product shots convert without a background fill and without the white halo that flattening would leave behind.
The quality slider is worth experimenting with here. The maximum value requests higher quality; it does not guarantee pixel-identical output. Lower settings may reduce file size while introducing visible artifacts. On flat graphics, screenshots, and anything containing text, keep it high β lossy compression is unkind to hard edges.
For icons and flat graphics, compare the WebP against the PNG at 100% zoom: the browser encoder used here is tuned for photos and can soften one-pixel lines. Squoosh or cwebp offer a true lossless mode if you need one.
The image conversion runs in your browser without uploading your file. Keep the original: this creates a still image and does not promise to preserve animation, metadata, or color profiles.
Using PNG to WebP Converter
Make PNG screenshots, illustrations and transparent product images lighter for a website or blog without losing the transparent background.
How to use it
- Drop the PNG onto the upload area, or click to choose it.
- Set Quality: start at 90, then lower it while watching the preview for smudged text or banding in gradients.
- Enter Max width to match the largest size your page actually displays, for example 1200 for a full-width blog image.
- Compare the byte sizes in the stats line; if the WebP is not smaller, keep the original PNG.
Worked example
- Input and settings
- banner.png, 2400 Γ 800, Quality 80, Max width 1200
- Expected result
- banner.webp at 1200 Γ 400 with any transparent areas kept.
Limits and common mistakes
- There is no dedicated lossless setting; even the highest Quality is not guaranteed to be pixel-identical to the PNG.
- Some browsers, mainly older Safari versions, cannot encode WebP; the tool then shows an error rather than saving a PNG under a .webp name.
- Tiny icons and pixel art sometimes get bigger as WebP; the stats line shows the real result.
- Some email clients and older desktop programs cannot open WebP, so keep the PNG for those uses.
